Viewing the farms and fields of Western Illinois and Eastern Iowa reminded me of boating to the Bahamas on a day when the ocean is smooth as glass and the islands are blue / purple bumps on the horizon, only the field are green and tan, and the forest horizon is emerald green. Northern Iowa, Western Wisconsin and Eastern Minnesota are much more hilly than I expected.   The forests are mostly deciduous with occasional stands of conifers. I guess western Minnesota is where the phrase “Land of 10,000 Lakes” comes from.   Surprised those folks get any work done with the fishing possibilities. The roads west of St Cloud MN and into North Dakota are mostly wonderful, really beautiful country with very stern people. Not many smiles in Western Fargo, ND.

Riding across North Dakota today thinking about how much Alison would have loved this trip, the rolling hills, the wind buffeting and backing, a beautiful but stark landscape and then for one brief minute she was there and said “Okay then, I’m here to the west coast, but then I have to go and you have to get on with it. ” ….djc
